Ding! DIng! We have a winner. This is the real reason politicians look the other way. Their donors want them to. The taxpayers get screwed. Not only that, but the poorest Americans get screwed, since the illegals drive their wages down through competition.
Supply and demand determine the flow of people into a job market. If no one wants to pick fruit all day, the wage payed will go up until it looks attractive to pick fruit. Once enough people choose to pick fruit for the higher wage, the wage levels will stabilize. (I liked the garbageman analogy, those guys make good money around here!)
My wife is a nurse from California. Not only that, when we went to Cali for vacation, I had to take her to the emergency room. I thought I had stepped into Mexico! We were the only Americans there. Hospitals like this one are losing so much money every month, that they are forced to close. When this happens, the remaining hospitals are put under greater stress. (For the record, my aunt was an illegal alien, and I have no problem with Mexicans. Heck, half of my family can speak Spanish.)
If you break the law, there should be consequences. Don't like it, then change the law. Until that happens, the US Army should be on the borders instead of in Iraq. Gee, stop pissing off Muslims and controlling the borders... you'd think that would be a good start towards reducing terrorism. By the way, I am a USAF officer on active duty, and I live near the Canadian border, which is a piece of cake to penetrate. My business is nukes, and believe me, it is scary that the government does nothing to stop Al Qaeda from taking a 90 minute drive and paying us a visit.
