Alright.. I will try this without the censor.. or need for one..
- You are on a CONTOUR enthusiast group.. Bashing these cars is not something smart to do on this site.
- If you JUST bought it because it was cheap, and late model, then the old saying: "you get what you pay for" comes to mind... just because something is cheap doesn't mean that it will be of any use, or reliable in the least... however, just because YOURS isn't great, doesn't mean that anyone else's can't be.. You are knocking the "granny car" choice, yet you bought one?
- If it makes noises, you might try asking what to do to FIX those noises... maybe there MIGHT be one or two members on here who have devoted a little time to learning these cars, and could help you to alleviate these problems..
- For future reference, the humor on this site is what you would refer to as "out there" and it can offend many people easily, but if you do so choose to stay around long enough to get used to us, I am sure that you would catch on, and learn the ins and outs of your car while you are at it. Maybe you could leave here knowing a little more than you know now... that is always a good thing to do, as a person.
- Try to refrain from taking such an aggresive attitude, much like the two posters after you did. That was uncalled for, and I am sure that they can see that, too.. (I am on THAT team, and I am calling it like I see it, still.. much like anyone else here will..)
- Ease up on the mindset that this isn't a good car.. this is a WORLD CLASS car, built from handling heritage, and it is hard, even by TODAY'S standards to find a car that will handle as well as these cars. Safety ratings are top notch, and reliability is a phrase that is hand in hand with maintenance.. as with any car.
We love to help... just get offended when our time to help is thwarted so absently as to say "I could care less".. if you cared less, you wouldn't be asking for help, now would you? So.. let's start over.. and say.. Welcome to CEG.. I hope that you learn alot while you are here... Search most of your questions, before posting, and I am sure that you will get whatever answers you are wanting without having to wait for someone to answer them again. Again... enjoy your car! Ray

So why did Ford stop making Contours anyway?
They should have gotten rid of the Taurus. I have a 96 and its a big piece O' junk for the most part. I replaced all the engine mounts because the engine jumps foward when you put it in drive or go around corners. Turns out it was the subframe bushings which were like 30 bucks. I had to replace the camshaft because the sensor melted and tore up the tip. I could go on...
As far as getting a deal on my Contour, its not broken. It was maintained, well. I spent a few weeks looking at used cars. Most people find a problem with their car and try to sell it off before it gets totally messed up.

Think because they wanted Focus to replace both Escort and Contour at the same time.

Ford quit making them because the dealers never wanted them and Ford wanted to replace both the Contour and Escort with the Focus. The Contour line started out as a pretty legitimate stab at making a smaller performance sedan that could go toe to toe with VW Jettas and the Japanese, not to mention the other European sedans that the Mondeo (UK version of the Contour) would compete against, but then Ford also decided that they'd push them as rental and fleet cars, so in the end it diluted the model line. Most of the people you run into here are a lot more focused on the performance potential that was built into the cars, though.
Anyway, I was going to say to be sure to test your horn as part of your cruise control diagnosis. Just to make sure that you're getting power to the wheel.

The servo motor for the cruise control might be bad. It is mounted on the firewall just behind the drivers' side strut tower. The original servo went bad on my car and I replaced it with a used one from a '95 Contour... about a year later it went bad too. I got a complete cruise control kit brand new from someone on ebay for just $30. I swapped the used servo for the new one and it has worked perfectly since. I'll look to see if they still advertise it. Here's a new kit for $50... it will probably solve your problem and is worth the price: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33595&item=7963065701&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW Then you'll have a bunch of new extra parts to either sell or use to decorate your next Christmas tree. Word of advice... my cruise kit came with 2 cables... one for the 2.0L and one for the 2.5L. Neither fit my car properly. One was way too long, the other about a 1/2 inch too short and held the throttle body open all the time. I had to use the original cable which came with the car.
