Where is the neutral safety switch located on an automatic V6?

It's part of the MLPS (manual lever position sensor). It is on the trans where the shift cable attaches. Top side of trans under air intake tube.

is it hard to replace

If your talking about the solinoid switch that keeps the car from shifting into gear without the brake depressed, then it's on the shifter mechanism under the consol. You have to remove the consol to replace it. The consol is four screws in the front, and two in the base of the arm rest. It takes about 30 minutes to get it out if you've doen it before abotu an hour if you haven't.

The neutral safety switch is the device that keeps you from starting the engine when the transmission's in gear and is part of the MLPS as Big Jim stated.

my reverce lights don't work and i think that is the culprit

The transmission range sensor and the manual lever position switch are two names for the same thing.
