Actually, don't bother replacing the EGR valve as they seldom go bad unless you manually confirm it is defective, i.e, leaky diaphram, stuck actuator, or carbon blockage.

Most EGR problems are due to either blocked EGR passages in the throttle body/intake or a faulty DPFE sensor. Those two faults cover over 90% of the failures I have seen on any Ford.

That said, if there is EGR flow at idle when there shouldn't be, the symptoms will include poor idle and lousy acceleration.

When you first press the throttle from idle, the engine stumbles & hesitates badly.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

SHO, yes, that's true, but I replaced the EGR after I checked everything else, including the passage cleaning...there wasn't much there. i can't believe that Ford cheaped otu on some of the engine components....PLASTIC?!?!?come on....

I'd like to thank everyone for their advice. I replaced the plugs with the Autolite Double platinums last night and it seems to have taken care of the problem. I couldn't get the wires yet (I don't want cheap ones) but the problem seems to be cured.

As for the EGR valve, there was a good coating of carbon in the valve so I'm sure that was defective (or getting there)

One question, what is the DPFE sensor? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with fords yet. Also, do you have to remove the EGR valve to get to the DPFE... I hope not.

Thanks again!

Differential Pressure Feedback EGR, you do not have to remove the EGR.

If you follow the lines coming out of the EGR, and look down, what looks like a little metal box right below the EGR....That's the DPFE. Cheap part....

Well, back again...

I am having the same trouble with the car again. The CEL is back on and throwing code P0402. The car seems to only buck uopn acceleration or "step in" As you may recall, the EGR valve, Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs (Autolite Double Platinum), and wires (Motocraft from Dealer) were replaced a few months ago.

I just, last night replaced the EGR Solenoid and the DPFE sensor as well with no improvement in the symptoms.

What do I try now? I think P0402 is gone now though but I still get the bucking / hesitation.

You did not mention the hoses. Check if there might be a leak on the hoses for the DFPE and EGR.

The hoses LOOK ok but I didn't do any kind of pressure tests or anyting. Would hoses cause this hesitation / bucking or is it just a coincidence (sp?) that these problems (egr system / bucking) occured together?

Yes to both (it could be either or). Did you do the suck test for the EGR again (I know you said earlier that the EGR was replaced. Just in case the EGR or DPFE replacemnt was defective.
