They designed the engine for Ford. Did you think ford could get 170hp out of 152 cu.in. in 1995?

...in 1991 IIRC

Also the Porsche prototype made at least 220HP though it used a custom tubular manifold as well.

bigger displacement? not IIRC. It was an inch longer, though, and ford shortened it, messing up the harmonics in the proccess.

What's the fuss about Mazda? They have a pretty respectable racing heritage!

The problem with the Mazdaspeed 6 is that most people were expecting numbers comparable to the STi and EVO, which it fell short. Of course, part of why it fell short was because they themselves were not shooting for those numbers! Its meant to compete more with a Legacy GT or G35 coupe more than anything else. Admittedly, from the manufacturer posted times of mid 6 sec 0-60 times, it still does fall a tad short. But this car hasn't even been made yet (production shortfalls due to fires in japanese plants.) Edit: the ones you see are not production cars but test mules.

Personally, I would prefer that Ford use the Duratec35 with AWD in an SVT Fusion especially if it made 280+ on premium. But I'd be satisfied with a direct injected 274HP I4 as well!

I figured Ford Europe could. With Cosworth help, of course. Sierra RS500's got 204bhp out of a 2.0L at 6000rpm (Pinto motor origins!) in 1986 (designed earlier of course), with boost. 550bhp in race trim. And the RS200 made up to 350bhp stock (this was the highest stock power level) out of a 1.8L, and in race trim it was enlarged to a 2.1L to make 700bhp. Boosted as well, but still!

I guess I just expected more from Ford. Oh well, modern economies just don't make it worth it for Ford to design engines, or chassis's, or transmissions for Ford vehicles. And in some cases, the entire vehicle.
