I need help getting into this thing. mostly, I need some comments regarding equipment. I worked as an old-school DJ long ago when we had turntables and LPs. Now.. I am trying to get back and I am not sure where the trend is moving to: CD Mixers OR MP3 + Laptop + software?? Okay... I know most of us have all our musics on HDD in MP3 formats.... But I am not sure if current up-to-date DJs are using Laptops and software instead of physical equipment such as CD scratchers and things. Any DJ in the house to help me with that ? I've seen some KEWL mixing software like these: http://www.mixvibes.com/http://mp3-player.audio4fun.com/dj-music.htmand I am sure there are MANY others software.... and they all look nice... but the question is: is that the way to go? Thanks guys... BB

It really depends on the club. Most newer clubs (dance and strip both) are moving towards MP3 systems, and auto-balance and crossfading. Hell, then even match the BPM's for you now! I just got done installing a $25k setup for a club here in town, including a simple computer and winamp setup, with big-screens all over showing the visualizations over videos. Very slick setup, but I still prefer spinning wax myself. For a lack of a better term, the "ghetto clubs" still use LPs and tables, since they like the very fine control you can only get on them. (The MP3 systems are nice, as are the Pioneer CDMixers, but nothing compares to the sound of needle scratching on good tables...)
So, it really depends on what type of club you plan on working for. I still play with the turntables at home, but on the weekends I'll guest-DJ at the club now and then, and then its all MP3. Point and Click DJ'ing.

Okay... thanks for the input.
Lets assume LPs is out of the game.
I have all my music in MP3 format.
I can choose two different paths:
1. Laptop + software: buy the software and the external soundcard and learn how to use the program.
2. CD mixers: convert all MP3 to Audio-CDs and buy conventional equipment... Cd mxers, amps, etc.
I dunno which way to research.... stick to convetional or buy a laptop.
Thanks

If you go CD, there are quite a few record pools you can join and get all the newest stuff sent to you based on your musical preference. I say if you're just downloading MP3's on the bootleg tip, be careful, because you're turning a profit on stolen intellectual property. I just do it for fun here and there, and I use a computer setup. I use Atomix VirtualDJ, but I've also used OTS Turntables before. Both allow you to scratch and there's even hardware you can purchase: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html.(Ripped) MP3's are much more portable than carrying cases of CD's that might get lost, scratched, or whatever else. But bascially, whatever you can do with CD mixers, you can still do with a laptop/hardware setup.

well then, the way you write portrays you as a complete veg head.
anyways, yes, i am a DJ, but no longer work clubs/parties like i used to. i sold all my equipment because of rarity of jobs and work as a wedding/corporate party DJ now. guarenteed job everyweekend.
i used pioneer CD mixers and effect processor.
Kinyoto on here is an amazing DJ, he should chime in soon i hope.

get a pair of cdj-800 and decent mixer and you can buy enought mp3 on beatport.com releaserecords.com there are a ton of dance music oriented places that sell mp3. soulseek is still king though. and you can donate 5$ a month and get privliges.

No flames.. I am just asking, okay?
How about (2) Gemini & Gemini Mixer??
I know already that you gonna flame, because I've found a complete kit for less than $500 whereas only one CDJ-800 is already $450.
my plan was to buy something cheap right now, get the feeling for it, and upgrade as necessary.
Another question, if you really gonna say NO to gemini set, what would you say is priority: CD player or mixer? Which should be decent quality to start with? I mean... would u say get the crappy Gemini players BUT a decent mixer or the other way around?
thanks for the input!

It mostly depends on your preference. All of the clubs i've been to have a couple turntables, as well as cd players, and whatever else the DJ brings with him. One of my friends spins mostly records, but also has a cd player that he busts out sometimes. Some things you can't get on vinyl i guess.
the mp3 cd players are really cool though, I mean you can spin 2 cd's all night if you wanted to.
Personally, i'm looking to buy some equipment soon. I'll probably start with a couple of turntables, but make sure i have extra inputs on the mixer so i can hook up a cd player in the future.
