lies. they are there to center the wheel on the hub, or at least do a better job of it. torqued is torqued. no matter what. it cant really be easier by placing a plastic ring between the inside of the wheel hub and the actual hub.... think about it. get rings. take it from someone who balances custom wheels everyday.
