It's a prime example.

If the stock damper takes out harmonics to lessen crank whip and torsional bending and the DMD takes even more flex and whip out (above 3000rpm mainly) I think having ZERO damper and taking ZERO flex, vibrations, and whip out would constitute a valid reason for failure due to crank whip.

JonsZX2SR - obviously you have never seen the stock crank damper. It has an elastomer ring and weight attached to it just as Terry stated and even you "described" in your decription of a crank damper. Therefore you yourself proved yourself wrong. Quite efficient.

Nope - you are confused.

DMD - the "dual mode" is torsional and lateral damping. Torsional vibes have nothing to do with whip - I could search for Terry's posts where he states this. To lessen crank whip you need the second mode damping of the DMD - so the stock and the UDP are exactly the same for this (ie do nothing to lessen whip). Also I've never heard that the torsional damping range of an UDP is any greater than the stock unit, it just also damps lateral in the same range.

The danger of the UDP is that the torsional vibes will resonate at the crank freq and and cause a fracture, typically (IIRC) seen around bearing one. :p

The people that made UDP's specifically for the Duratec and removed all harmonic dampening had no idea it would cause damage to the engine. Sure, it works great with other engines, but not this one. That little bit of rotational weight as well as the speed of the spinning accessories on the FEAD isn't that bad. If it takes 1-2HP to run them and to make sure things are kosher with the crank harmonics, I'll take the penalty.

The vibrations that are dampened with the DMD might actually help the engine run more effecient.

Leave the crank alone. Get some overdrive pullies for the P/S and alt. Less friction, same harmonic dampening.
