That was totally wrong to do. It is very hard to calibrate the needles to work correctly.
Yup I'm feeling like a realy stupid idiot right now. I read someone else on here had put the SVT needles onto his cluster, and others are installing indiglow gauges and so I figgured it wouldn't be toooooo hard. I was able to get the tach reading right and the fuel gauge is close.
Originally posted by CSVT1214: And, swapping the faces was really wrong also. The needles will move to the position of your old speedometer.
So since your old speedometer does not go upto 260 kmh, theres no way the SVT gauge face on your old cluster will work right. The needle will always be in the wrong position.
I'm fully aware of this. Comparing the two speedos the numbers are pretty close to each other upto around 130ish. So the readings would only be off by a little bit (like a couple of mm)I considered this before swapping them.
Originally posted by CSVT1214: You need to make sure the needles are pressed down onto the metal pins just right, otherwise they do not move freely. And, you have to get them onto just the right spot otherwise you will get totally wrong readings.
I tried several times repositioning the speedo needle with varying distances down on the pins, but it's still doing the same thing, needle jumps up to a value when the car starts moving and then stays there until the car has stopped for a couple of seconds. I'm wondering if something electronic screwed up.
new questions:
1) Do the gagues require the weight of the needle on them for proper positioning or will the pins turn regardless? Would I be able to turn the key to the on position (not running) so that the temp and fuel gauges would be at a known position and then press the needles on?
2) If I have to get a new cluster(which i'm probably looking at doing anyway now) and get one from a E0 SVT or another '96, would I be able to just plug it in and it will be ok or will it have to be calibrated?
3) If I have to get it calibrated, where would I be able to go to have this done? The stelearship?
Thanks for any help
Edit:
Would this cluster work? It looks like an E0 cluster.
