Okay folks, I searched and searched and found several possibilities but wanted to poll the masses for opinions. In my 98 SVT, the shifter felt like it barely engaged each gear for some time now, but tonight at a stop sign I went from 2nd to 1st and nothing. There are no gears with/without clutch. I can move the shifter side to side in either the forward, middle, or rear position. I know it's nothing inside the cabin as I've already inspected that. Might it be broken shift cable ends? or a shift cable? Seeing as how I need the car to drive 2000 miles next week, any fast help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

1 of 2 things: 1) Shift linkage retaining bolt (inside shift tower) sheared off and you have no gear engagement. 2) You shift linkage itself broke. 99.872654% chance it's #1

I dunno, had trans shop do it. I don't know if the trans had to be pulled or not. Unless you have a good understanding of hw the trans works, prolly better to take it to a good trans shop.

It happened to my Cougar way back in 1999 and it was covered under warranty. I did see the warranty bill though and they got paid $1,000! They where unsuccessfull at fishing for it, so they had to pull the trans and break her open to remove the bolt ... requires new gaskets & fluid ... blah blah blah ... VERY COMMON PROPLEM.
1) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THE CAR! The bolt could get lodged in the diff and destroy it! 2) Try to "fish for it" by draining the trans and fealing for it with your finger through the drain hole. A very strong magnet will help move it around the bottom the transmission ... IF IT'S DOWN THERE. 3) If you can't fish it out ... enjoy pulling the trans
