Wow, I just joined the forum. Back in January 2002, I purchased a silver 2000 Mercury Mystique with Duratec V6 and 5 speed with 21,800 miles on it. I was a little apprehensive about the car, never owned a Ford product. However, as soon as I pulled out of the dealer and hammered the accelerator, I heard the growl of the little 2.5 v6 and watched the speedo rocket me to 60 very quickly. Several months later, I decided that it's now time to scrap the factory exhaust. I plan on keeping the resonator as is, however I want to add a Y adapter at the rear axle, splitting the exhaust into two out the back, similar to the way some Accord's, Acura's etc. have. In my setup, there will be no mufflers out the back. Will the res alone keep the noise at reasonable level? Has anyone done this?

First of all, i would like to say welcome to CEG. Alot of the answers you seek can be found when you use "search". But, as for the exhaust part, i've got a 2.5L SE contour, and i'm going to be doing that type of exhaust with only a single muffler. I'm actually going to have it installed on Friday. I'll be glad to let you know how it goes.

Ren

Edit: our SVT contours have that "dual" type of exhaust. Those usually sell for about $150 used or so.

Give me more beer and CEG before i get depressed!

A nice used SVT exhaust is the way to go for you.

I just ordered the Monza dual exhaust setup for the Cougar from BAT. They claim it will fit the Contour/Mystic easily with only minor modfications to the rear tail pipe hangers. Also ordered the low restrictive Y pipe and Cat from them. I'll let you know how it works out after I install them.

I have a y-splitter i'll sell to you real cheap if you want it. it's aluminized, never used. It'd be perfect. PM me if you want it.
I would say that the system will sound awesome. If you want to hear what my car sounded like with a similar system, PM me. FYI, the stock resonator is claimed to be one of the bigger restrictions in the stock exhaust.
