Ok here's the deal. Car stalled at a traffic light wouldn't restart. Had it towed to a repair shop. When they went to pull into the shop it started but ran ruff, stalled on them and they couldn't restart, pushed it into the facility. Couldn't work on it till the next morning, got in it it started up and purred like a kitten. They tried to pull codes and everything checked out OK except for a bad O2 sensor which it has had for 75,000 miles. They checked Starter. battery, alternator and everything checked OK. They found nothing wrong. Picked the car up drove home, used it for work the next day 35 miles of city drivng and everything is fine. Any idea's on what I should check or look for. Car has 110,000 mles on it. This is the first problem I've had with the car except for the CEL staying on which is due to a bad 02 sensor. Seems on the early Contours these O2 sensors always fail after a few thousand miles. Should not have an effect on why the engine stalled and wouldn't start.

The only thing I could think of is a bad coil maybe, I could be wrong, did it ever have a tune up? I had a similar problem, but it always started, mine was a vaccum leak.

If you find you still have the problem....I'd replace not clean the IAC. I had a similar problem, when I was at idle, the car would just die. Wait about an hour or so and it would start and run fine until it would randomly die when at idle. Replaced IAC and problem is no more.

Never replaced an alternator. Charging system has never been an issue. This is only the second problem I've had with the car. The first one was the moosing which I took care of with the 1/2 inch copper pipe cap with the hole drilled in the middle. No vacuum leak they checked for that. Oh yeah I also replaced the waterpump BEFORE it went bad, due to hearing all the horror stories. All of the other common stuff like Brakes, Rotors, Wires and Plugs, Battery have been done, which I don't consider a problem, comes with regular maintenance.

I agree 100% on the IAC, these things do strange things as I can attest to...mine would stall and not start, then run fine for another day, then same thing again....cleaned it out and not had that problem since. My moneys on the IAC valve.

Don't mean to sound ignorant but where can I find this IAC valve. I'm a carbourator guy from way back and this high tech stuff becomes a bit confusing. Whatever happened to the days of just fuel, spark, condensor and points. Nowadays you have to be a mechanical and electrical engineer to work on the darn things. Guess that why I love my American Sedan Mustang so much easy to work on and diagnose. I would like to try the IAC Valve cleaning. Thanks for the replies.

Does this still apply if I have not had the high reving from 1500 to 2000 RPM. I will try the cleaning but, my problem was sitting at a light and having the motor stall and not being able to restart. Thanks again for the responses.
