205/50/16 was never a stock size.
My E0 98 SVT came with 205/55R16 Goodyear GSC.
Currently I have 225/50ZR16 Dayton Daytona ZR tires on it. They are the best tires I have had on it. They handle well, do well in the rain, and wear better than anything else I have had on it. Dayton is a Bridgestone brand. In fact, my tires say made in Japan on them. They are also available in 205/55RZR16.
The 215/50R16 size is a bit unusual and does not provide nearly as much selection as either the 205/55 or the 225/50. The 205/55 and the 225/50 are the same diameter but the 225/50 is about 3/4" wider.
At the same time, the 215/50 is slightly smaller in diameter than the 205/55 and nearly 1/2" wider.
Any of those three sizes will work well.
