So.... I maintain my car well, treat it well, and hand the keys to my sister and the tranny exploded 150 feet from departure.

Let me go into more detail. She was in gear, 30mph, and stepped on the gas a little, and the car stopped moving, acts like it is in neutral. All gears still engage AND the speedo goes up. The car had not been making any funny noises, and I can not see any damage to the axles. I think the front diff just decided it's time was up and kerploded.

What's the best course of action? Replace the whole tranny. I can get a new one for about 550 bucks, or should I rebuild this one? I was planning on selling the car, just due to the fact that I have too many vehicles, so a bunch of upgrades are not a huge priorety.

Oh man that stinks - especially when you're trying to sell the car! (I've been seeing it in the classifieds for many months now, price reductions and all...)

Highly recommend a new transmission if you can grab one cheap .. it's a great selling feature.

Wait, I'm confused here.

The car acts like its in Neutral, but the speedo is still increasing?

Also, since you stated that it still seems to engage all the gears, I'm guessing its more of a clutch problem. Unfortunately that means dropping the tranny too.

In terms of selling the car, your best course of action would be a new transmission. Might as well replace the clutch while you're in there.

Sorry to hear about it. That sucks!

I hate stories like this, cause I've got a 120k car with mostly highway miles. Argh...

The clutch is engaging fine. If I put it in 3rd gear with the clutch pushed, the speedo says zero. If I let the clutch out, the speedo immediatly goes up. It acts like it has a broken cv, or axle, but visual inspection shows no damage to those parts. My bet is on the front diff, considering that is the weakest point in the transmission, although it is odd that it just went all at once with no warning. Half of me wants to just do the 3L swap, and new cluch and tranny all at the same time, but I already have about 4 other projects in process.... Sigh. Another thought is just to get an LSD if it is just the front diff. Hmmmmmmmm

The CV joints are sourrounded in rubber boots and they will contain any fragments that happen if the CV joint fails so from the outside there will be no visible damage.

The speed sensor that works the speedometer reads from either notches cut in the differential ring gear or a segmented magnet attached to one of the output shafts of the transmission.

From what you're saying it sounds like the clutch and gear box of the trany are ok. The problem lies between the gear box and the wheels. That is basically the differential, inner alxes, CV joints and outter axles.

Becasue the transmission has a standard differential all that has to happen to prevent the car from being able to drive its self is the connection to any one of the wheels has to be broken and the differential will automatically send power to what ever axle is easiest to turn.

If the differential itself broke then there would be no speedo reading at all so I'm inclined to think that the differential itself is ok. What probably happened is a spline where the axles attach to the differential failed, a CV joint failed or an inner axle failed.

my suggestion is to get your car to a transmission specialist with a good reputation and see what they find. You need to shop around a bit, talk to people and see if they recomend a shop, the one you hear the most good things about is the one you should go to. Although it will prolly be among the pricier of your options the chance that you'll get good, honest service is alot better than at a lesser renouned shop.

I agree with you entirely. I'll be doing all my own work, and a tranny swap doesn't scare me. I was also suprised at the speedo reading. It happened at 9pm and was dark and cold, so I didn't take a better look at it. Thinking more clearly now, I tend to agree with you that it is quite possibly broken somewhere along the axle. I'll take a closer look and let everyone know as soon as I can
