Anyone remember this minivan ? I'm sure some of you do. According to his site, he has run up to 24 PSI boost at the strip, and 13 normally.

Here is my question: Chris's kit is going to run at what, 5.5 PSI? What is so phenominal about the Chrysler 4 in that minivan that it allows such high boost levels? I'm not trying to question you, Chris. I simply don't know a lot about forced induction tuning, and I'd like to learn more. I suspect that it has a bit to do with compression ratios, but 24 PSI without detonation? Surely we can find a way to get the Duratech to accept 10 - 12 PSI? It'd be mighty embarrasing to drop $4500 into an SVT and then get beat by Dad's 4-banger Caravan.... (he's running 12.6x's)

Well,

I do believe he didn't start with 24PSI, but he did start with an engine that has seen boost already.

So, likely, that engine has a lower starting compression ratio than our Duratec.

Those two things make it easier to add boost. I'm sure with enough cubic dollars, one could make the Duratec take more boost than Chris is planning (and I believe he is going for ~8psi, the Vortech is ~5-6 psi boost)

But, it will take time.

FWIW,

TB

2.5L 4-cylinder
All forged internals
~7.5 CR
Small high boost turbo (most efficient 15-19psi)

Duratec
9.7-10.25CR (hmm I see a noticeable difference already :p )
Forged crank; that's good. Powdered rods; hmm better than cast. Hypereutectic pistons (see rods)
Medium sized, medium boost turbo (most effecient between 8-12psi)

Also I predict the boost level to be around 8-9psi

Yes, but then we still have the 4 banger vastly outpowering the V6....

Drop your CR, get forged Pistons and rods, And you will be able to push level closer tot hat van. I'm sure the guy has blown that engine up a few times before he got it right!

the 4 cyl motor in those minivans and other cars are considred to be dodges greates enginering feet to date even the new neons run of basically the same block it is almost bullet proof and way over bulit allowing it to take a lot more punshiment. small side note the for 2300 cc 4 cyl which was placed in the pinto and about a hundred other vehicles also shares some the same attributes ive even thought about dropping one in my mystique you can suck more HP's out that motor than the all alum. one in the mystiques

Again you are comparing a boosted engine verses N/A.
Displacement is close or the same (2.2L & 2.5L like the Caravan is) The larger 4-cylinders actually produce better torque but sacrifice redline and rev-ability to do so!

Only the R/T engine boasted more HP than the stock SVT at 224. They went to Lotus the get that breathing magic done (DOHC head) All other mopar turbos were in the 142-174 range.

I can think of a forged bottom end turbo Duratec that made a conservative 450HP.

It's not that it's not possible in the least. It's just a heck of a lot more expensive!

Another thing you are missing is the fact the Contour platform is setup for handling.
Also the weight transfer of a caravan is non-existant. (front to back anyway - side to side is another matter)

I learned turbo's on the 2.2L Mopars. They are quite stout beasts and very fast for the econo boxes they were put in. I have nothing bad to say about them mechanically... (ATX's aside - they suck!)

Personally I'd much rather have my SVT than any Mopar turbo. Even the Mitsu built ones; though I am partial to the Conquest TSi a lot! laugh
