Looked into Vonage, but settled on Packet8. $20 and all the calls you can make. E911 is a few bucks more if you are concerned. I took my DTA to Chicago when I was there for three months and people still called my home number. They where baffled especially when I called them and they saw what number I was calling from ("I thought you where in Chicago? Yes. And this is your home number? Yes!")

I did see something on a website today that talked about how people can activate 911 coverage on VOIP but either forget to or just don't. It was in the context of one girl whose family had gone to VOIP trying to call 911 while her house was being robbed.

I have Comcast VOIP in Detroit and cannot complain. I pay a 911 fee every month.

Cartman,
I have CavTel's Phonom VOIP service. Had it for a couple of months now. Overall it works well, can't really tell any difference over a normal POTS line. Twice we've had situations where people have called and we never get a ring. Once it was because of a Comcast hiccup and I had to reboot the DVC device and then all was well again.
I was shelling out about 50/month for Verizon phone service for the POTS line, now I'm down to 20/month, with no fees (for now). We've got cellphones if we need to dial 911, so that's not a big concern for me, and the 911 locator is an option as well.
