I have had both Spax and Koni struts/shocks. I really liked the Spax. Externally adjustable from 1 - 15, I had them ste at 3 in front and 1 in rear. Nice comfortable ride, until you pushed, then they were like different shocks. The Koni's handled well but a real rough ride and had to remove them to adjust. The adjustment was 1 - 5. Spax was what all the Formula 1 teams used. Best I ever had!!

Yeah. Avoid them both in that application. Neither is truly suited for GCs, even if they might be fine as an OEM replacement.

yea i should have searched more before i asked the kyb/sachs/GC question...but thru my searching i've found equal opinions on using konis, bilsteins, and spax...i did read that spax has the shorter rods to compensate for lowering. has anybody used spax with GC coils? or do you know if GCs tear up any strut other than koni?? Because for the price of bilstein, I might as well go all out and get koni. I had some mild experience with spax when I had a bmw, nothing too major though. another Q...the konis dont have to be removed to adjust them , do they??? TIA, again

Konis have the best rep, re durability, and I've seen the Koni/GC combo quite a bit. Thing is, with an adjustable coil spring like the GC, I'd really want to be able to adjust the damping, as well. If it's absolutely just for looks, then maybe the Bilstein, BAT, or Spax struts would be OK, but at that, IMHO, you'd be better with the Bilstein. No data to base that on, except I figure they'd last longer. Still, best bet is Koni.
The Koni "yellows" or "sport" are adjustable on the car. The "reds" or "specials" have to be removed. (They adjust by twisting the shaft, or some such.) The previous poster who mentioned removing them must have been referring to the reds, although I didn't think they even made them for this car. I'm wrong on that, but still, I don't know many people who have them.
HTH.
PS. I forgot this was a thread about Spax adjustables. I didn't mention them because, frankly, they are still very new and nobody has them. They might be fine with GCs, but then, nobody has really tried it. Besides, Konis are cheaper once you leave the BAT catalog.

well for me its not merely aesthetic, but i've never actually owned a lowered car, so i am sure ANY suspension upgrade will be like riding rails for me. my concern is that i have heard many refer to the linear rating of the GCs and how it eats struts. i was thinking the spax would be a nice alternative because they are supposed to have shorter rods but i havnt found anybody, thru searches, that has used this combo so i might have to be the guinea pig. as for the spax adjustables, i am with you...they turn out to be more cash than konis. to anybody looking for konis for our cars, i found them on importpartsusa.com FOR 152.60 PER CORNER!!!!! i think i should be exempt from newbie status because of that killer find haha

I installed the BAT sway bar with poly bushings using my stock brackets, and while I still had the stock suspension on. It was a huge improvement in the tightness during cornering yet didn't change the overall ride at all of course.
My stock brackets lasted about a year and a half before they broke. I guess one of them had started cracking and I didn't know it, but it put a lot of tension on the other side when it happened. I was sitting at a stop light and one wheel was on uneven ground. I heard this lound snap, loud enough that I thought I got rear-ended but didn't feel any movement! I even got out while the light was still red and looked at the back of the car. Didn't see anything of course and I didn't know what it was and didn't suspect the brackets.
I didn't realize something was up until I was in a turn on the highway and the car just felt squirelly, harder to track in the turn with any stability. Of course I slowed down. That was when I suspected a sway bar issue but had mostly forgot about the loud noise. When I got under both brackets mounts had torn free and the brackets were pretty much twisted. What I did was remove the brackets and hammer them back to shape. Then I welded the metal that they bolted to back together and then threw in a few more reinforcement welds. It hasn't been an issue since and the repair was free since I had a small mig welder.

I have a question about using the ground controls. Can they be used with any strut? What about different types of springs, or do they use their own springs?
I have had the BAT suspension for a little about 3 years and I really love it except for the fact that I want a little more ground clearance AND the fact that the rear seems to sit about a half inch lower than the front now. I'm thinking of adding GC's to the rear and adjusting the height up if they will match up to the springs.
The other option is to remove the rear springs and put in some kind of a seat to raise the height that half inch. I'm contemplating using some strong rubber hose to slide onto the bottom and top coils for the added height.
What do you think?

Just reda the question warmonger. yes GC's can be used on other struts, but not with the best results. I've rode in a few GC equipped cars riding on stock svt struts and the other was I believe kyb's. They rode like garbage. I run Konis with my gC's and it rides nice and firm. Where exactly do you want more ground clearance? Front and rear or just the rear? I need a little more info..I'm kinda lost excuse my lazy mind.
