I hardly think 802.11b wireless broadband access was available anywhere near 1997.
I'm trying to figure out what you have -- do you have dsl/cable connected to a wireless setup at home, or are you actually receiving wireless broadband from a provider in another location? I'm confused

I went home for summers I felt like the Internet was crawling compared to my personal campus 10Mb connection (which this year the campus upgraded to 100Mb for everyone).
The bottleneck for connections is rarely the network. A better indicator or internet speed is the actual school or business connection whether it be a t-1, fractional t-3 etc. An upgrade from 10 - 100 will help with transfer within the school but will probably not increase browsing speed by much.

I have an antenna on my roof, directional, aimed at the ISP's POP antenna about 1/4 mile away on a grain elevator. The ISP claims to have a 8 to 10 mile radius. They use the 802.11b spec to broadcast their signal. A standard ethernet cable runs down from my antenna into my house to a PoE (Power over Ethernet, uses the unused wires in a CAT5e cable to send low voltage power to the antenna) box, and then on to my Vonage router. From there, it goes to my Linksys WRT55AG router, and out to my wireless laptop and wired desktop.
Yeah, I'm a techno geek.

That's bitchin! I'd love something like that, though I'd be pretty concerned about signal degradation in bad weather. Then again, if they claim 8-10 miles, it shouldn't be a problem at 1/4 mile for you.
I've got a B network in my house, I don't see a need for a G upgrade since I'm not streaming anything from one computer to another, just sharing a 'net connection.

Yeah, my router for my wireless laptop does a, b, and g. I just use a, though, because the signal is strong enough to go through my whole house (and likely out onto my back porch, though I haven't tried that- too cold) and not too many people have 802.11a cards. I use WEP and MAC address filtering, and I'll be going to static IP when I get time to fool with it. It's not likely someone is going to get on my system (would have to guess my MAC address (only one specific address allowed), my IP network range, and then the WEP key.)

I'm using both hardwire & super G wireless at home. Both are kewl. My daughters machine & my laptop are wireless. Now that I have my code reader & Alex Peper software, I can plug my cars into the laptop & save all the data files straight to my primary pc. It's quicker than I thought it would be, & I expected a lot.
The parental units both have machines that are hard-wired for speed, baby!
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
