Adam, I'm sorry but Terry is giving you incorrect information. If he is getting this info from the service manual/CDROM then it is wrong. Would not be the first time the manual is wrong.

I have access to the print of the rod and that is where my dimensions came from. Where are your "actual Ford factory specs" from? Again, the 2.5L and 3.0L use the same rod. The wrist pin diameter is the same between the two. Only difference is that the 3.0L wrist pin is longer.

That sounds right to me. From what I know the Stroke is the same on the 2.5 and 3L Duratechs. The bore varies and hence the rod length is larger on the 3L pistons to suit the 3L pistons.

I have a feelig that Terry will email me shortly

Terry gave me the Ford/AERA specs for both rods and they ARE different.

If you have a hard copy of information that says otherwise, why don't you email a scan to me, I need all the information I can get. adam@gforceauto.com

why would ford change the specs if they could have kept them the same? This does not make sense to make two different castings... think about this people. SAME PART NUMBER!!! Sounds like someone needs to get their facts straight....xs2z6200ch different... whats next an explanation of the same part number and two different measures

Now we can continue with this interest in 3.0 and 2.5 rods and pistons for the main focus of this post...

Terry you say the 2.5 and the 3.0 have different rod lengths but they have the same part number?

...because the ford specs and the machine shop data
say they are....They are only the same if you overlap
the tolerances for length and get lucky with a rod in
the 'middle range'...I have sent the data sheets to
the guy doing the rods....The numbers are 'close' but
not the same.I'm inclined to say that when the
production of the 2.5 left USA and went to Europe ford
picked the closest rod to the 2.5 and now uses it as a
'spare part' for all....

How do you get lucky with a cast part?

This is such bull. 2.5L production never left the U.S. Cleveland Engine Plant #2 is still making 2.5L engines, just not in high volume anymore because the only customer is Genk Assembly Plant in Belgium where the Mondeo is assembled. Metaldyne makes the raw forging and sends it to CEP#2 for finish machining. In fact, Metaldyne makes a LOT of rods for Ford.

Edit: CEP#2 also makes 2.5L and 2.0L engines for Jaguar but that's small volume, too.

The rods are forged powdered metal.

They have a much closer tolerance then any type of casting or typical forging. So close in fact that they do not even require balancing pads because they can be forged within 3 to 4 gram of each other.

They are also a LOT stronger then most people give them credit for. Actually they can have a higher yeild and tensile strength then a comparable typical forging does.

Powdered metal. It's not just for breakfast anymore.
