Nobody's badmouthing anything here. I'm giving you my opinion based on what computers I see coming into my shop for repair EVERY day. The most common are Compaq, close second are gateway. I hardly see any IBM's, and the ones I do are quite old. HP, sony and toshiba I don't see enough of to warrant any bad opinions, and again most are old and have outlived their usefullness anyway. Dell's I hardly ever see, and i am a dell certified repair center...I have nothing against them, just their computers are too damn big.

Unless you get the Dell 700M.. It's essentially what the OP is looking for, except for his dislike of Dell. I love mine.

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. It has a 15.4" screen, 1.30 GHz, 480 MB of RAM and internal network card. I paid $1,100, but I also got a router, printer and $520 worth of rebates as part of a package deal from Circuit City.

My aversion to Dell stems from customer support issues. I have Dell desktops at home and at the office. Everytime I call I get a long wait, and when I do speak with someone, the heavy accent makes communication a challenge.

There are lots of choices out there; a company can't afford to not get it right. I have no interest in continuing to patronize a company that wastes my time or causes me frustration.

Can't go wrong with a Toshiba.

Top 3 in my book-

Dell, Toshiba, IBM. In that order.

From there, Gateway has gotten better, Alienware if you can pay the stupid prices.

Avoid HP/Compaq. I've witnessed far too many hard drive failures in both models.

Also stay away from Sony. Overpriced, under supported, and highly bloated.

I Love my Dell notebook, and didnt like my old ThinkPad... I put laptops in this exact order:
Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, IBM, HP/Crapaq.

My Dell Latitude experience has been a great one, 3 year customer service, ALWAYS understood the customer service when I called them, came to MY House to fix my notebook, no sending it in, being 4+ weeks without my laptop, and getting it back with a Formatted hard disk... I would definatly buy a new Dell if I had the money.

For now, me and the ol' Dell Latitude CPx shall keep ridin along with just the problem of my keyboard is [censored] now from high usage

Dell beats IBM hands-down when it comes to avilability of useful support information- drivers, firmware updates, BIOS updates. Dell is incredibly simple to navigate, and make your life incredibly easy if you have your service tag handy. IBM makes life disgustingly difficult for you.

Not to mention IBM makes a habit of placing the case opening instructions on the INSIDE of the case.

Toshiba was at one point bottom of the barrel, but have been top notch for price/performance for a few years. They're the quiet ones, but damn are they solid hardware.

IBM hardware definitely beats Dell, but it's the after-purchase experience that kills them for me.

I have NEVER had to call IBM customer service, since in the 3 yrs I've had mine...nothing has ever had to be fixed.

And as far as driver updates and what not...all I've got to do is push the "ThinkPad" button, run update connector and it automaticaly searches for updates that are applicable to my machine.
