I've asked that question before.
Since then, I've concluded that even if you could safely underdrive, you're not going to net much in hp gain.
At present, the safe way to go is to underdrive the accessories and leave the "crank pulley" alone. But even that nets very little gain for the money.
Note that in the article I posted, the guys only got 3 extra horses (rounding up) out of a Saturn with the accessory drive belt completely off (100% underdriven). Assuming a reasonable UD of 20%, they figured theoretical gains of .6hp.
I know, I know – stock pulleys, like stock suspension bushings, aren't sexy, and you can't brag
about them in the pits…but in racing horsepower talks and marketing BS walks.
