would the codes on a 89 AWD tempo mean the same code on a contour or do code meanings varry from model to model. because my friends tempo has a code 122 and 168. but he only has the code reader he lost the chart to look them up

Actually, most of the codes are the same for ALL ford vehicles of the same vintage.

There are a few variations, but a generic Ford OBD-I chart would probably work out just fine.

The 89 will likely have two digit codes. Three digit codes were typically introduced between 92 and 94. It's a bit of potluck if the computer has ever been replaced.
