it's more likely that the eye inside the drive is worn out. The reason it will read cd's and not dvd's, or vice versa is because there are 2 laser eyes in the ps2. One for DVD, one for regular CDROM's. Mine has the same problem. Actually, when I bought it it didn't read anything, but now it just doesn't read DVD's (which makes it useless). There are 2 pots inside the machine that you can adjust to send more cirrent through the laser eye and make the beam stronger. It's a temporary fix but it will most likely last you a while. Only other solution is a new laser eye assy. $60 or so.

It's not toast..yet.

Mine did that, too. I found out the fix through a friend. When you psh the door shut, you can potentially push the gear a tooth or two off; and then it reads the disc wrong or not at all.

Anyways, I cant wait for my thumb drive..my red 418 hp Legacy awaits all to see
