FEAR is devastatingly debilitating. . . if a 300lb black man charged in and started beating some guy standing next to me, I would've done 1 of 2 things:
1. Run like a mo' fo' and forget the pizza.
2. Ask the owner behind the counter for a weapon to impale his fat blackness with, cut his legs up a little so he'll bleed fast and go down, then call the cops.
I'm leaning towards 1 since I don't want a record that could hurt my chances of getting a job, car, house, or renting a place. But that's just me. That's the easiest explanation for the "ByStander Effect".

Maybe it was a real-life example of the Chinese Restaurant episode of Seinfeld:
GEORGE: Excuse me, I was waiting here.
WOMAN AT PHONE: Where? I didn't see you.
GEORGE: I've been standing here for the last ten minutes!
WOMAN: Well I won't be long.
GEORGE: That's not the point. The point is I was here first.
WOMAN: Well if you were here first, you'd be holding the phone.
Maybe the guy was too busy blabbing on his phone in the back that the lady didn't think he was in line. But then again, she ended up spewing tons of expletives, spit at the manager, and her friend beat the living crap out of the guy.

Does anyone else notice the manager come out from behind the register and then as soon as he sees the black guy come in the store he turns right back around and gets back behind the register? ROTFPIMP!!!

Sorry, but the broad generalization that there is nothing anybody could have done is BS. I've been in situations like this many times (call it living in the wrong area, Detoit and SW San Anto). If I saw this entire thing unfold in front of me and the "little guy" was getting screwed because of some dumb [censored], I most definately would have jumped in, as would any of my friends. The people who are saying there's nothing that could have been done, obviously have never been involved in any street fights. First thing, get loud, obnoxious, and over confident. Even a little guy like me has made many a big guy back down from this alone. Pointing out the fact that they are an idiot, and about to be whooped by an entire store full of people also helps here, but you HAVE to be the aggressive one, and make the other dude realize you're not just blowing smoke up his ass (even though you might be).  People don't realize how much perception plays in these situations. I've made a number of 250-300lbs people back down from me (I'm 145 soaking wet), and if they don't, I've proven I can knock em to their ass if need be. (USMC, baby, ooh rah for hand-to-hand training.) E1

all this right before you puts 7 9mm rounds into your chest. people like that CAN NOT be reasoned with and RARELY get scared. as selfish as it might sound, i would rather have a guilty conscience for not helping than wake up with tubes in my chest.
