First thing, get loud, obnoxious, and over confident. Even a little guy like me has made many a big guy back down from this alone. Pointing out the fact that they are an idiot, and about to be whooped by an entire store full of people also helps here, but you HAVE to be the aggressive one, and make the other dude realize you're not just blowing smoke up his ass (even though you might be).

People don't realize how much perception plays in these situations. I've made a number of 250-300lbs people back down from me (I'm 145 soaking wet), and if they don't, I've proven I can knock em to their ass if need be. (USMC, baby, ooh rah for hand-to-hand training.)

all this right before you puts 7 9mm rounds into your chest. people like that CAN NOT be reasoned with and RARELY get scared. as selfish as it might sound, i would rather have a guilty conscience for not helping than wake up with tubes in my chest.
