Sorry, but the broad generalization that there is nothing anybody could have done is BS. I've been in situations like this many times (call it living in the wrong area, Detoit and SW San Anto). If I saw this entire thing unfold in front of me and the "little guy" was getting screwed because of some dumb [censored], I most definately would have jumped in, as would any of my friends. The people who are saying there's nothing that could have been done, obviously have never been involved in any street fights.
First thing, get loud, obnoxious, and over confident. Even a little guy like me has made many a big guy back down from this alone. Pointing out the fact that they are an idiot, and about to be whooped by an entire store full of people also helps here, but you HAVE to be the aggressive one, and make the other dude realize you're not just blowing smoke up his ass (even though you might be).
People don't realize how much perception plays in these situations. I've made a number of 250-300lbs people back down from me (I'm 145 soaking wet), and if they don't, I've proven I can knock em to their ass if need be. (USMC, baby, ooh rah for hand-to-hand training.)
