Fine wire plugs have only been available for a year or two. It is impossible for your 98 to have come from the factory with them. You probably had three single plats and three double plats installed at the factory.

The "fine-wire" plug is the standard for most Ford engines now. There is no longer a requirement for a platinum ground electrode using this design.

Ford started using fine wire plugs on the Duratec in the Contour in 96.

I took Motorcraft finewires out of my 98 SVT at 60,000 miles and installed Autolite double platinums. They didn't really look too bad at 60,000 miles, but I know how bad they tend to look at 100,000 miles.
