You obviously know very little about the Zetec engine if you're calling it a dog. Sure, it doesn't appear to be anything great coming from the factory, but it can be awakened quite easily. All it takes is some thought about what you're doing. It suffers from many of the same slumps the Duratec has - namely off-the-line acceleration.
