It's not that PS2 doesn't support it, but that few of its' games do. In fact GT4 may be one of the few if not only game that does. But one of the screen options in GT4 is a 1080i display.
You can do a search on PS2 1080i. There's quite a bit of info out there.

I use 1080i output for my TV and through my entertainment system I use component cables to the TV without any problem.

NFL 2k5 has a progressive scan option in the options menu. Go figure a $20 MSRP game would have it.

That doesn't surprise me. I had to replace a set of component cables that started acting funny. The employees at the local Gamestop didn't even know what component cables were, so I had to search the store for them myself.
IMO, component cables make a very noticable difference in picture quality even for standard res. TV. Before I got the replacement cables I had to use the regular composite cable that comes with the PS2. Blech. So even if the PS2 didn't support HD, I'd still recommend getting component cables.

I agree component make a huge diff. compared to composite.
But the diff. between component and s-video is negligable. esp. on anything less than a 32" tv imo

Any "symptoms" before it died?
Mine likes to uh, per say "hum" at higher intensity at immediate power on and when I go to shut it down..otherwise, it's quiet(er) during gameplay. The thing's going on..3 years old.
Replacement time soon?

It struggled for the last two years. It survived multiple moves and a roomie's peeing cat, so I guess I got off lucky.
I will be replacing mine early this coming week, as soon as my tax refund hit my back account.

Got me a black on black Mustang GT. 530HP BLOWN AND JUICED! No traction for the first 3-4 gears.
