That doesn't surprise me. I had to replace a set of component cables that started acting funny. The employees at the local Gamestop didn't even know what component cables were, so I had to search the store for them myself.
IMO, component cables make a very noticable difference in picture quality even for standard res. TV. Before I got the replacement cables I had to use the regular composite cable that comes with the PS2. Blech. So even if the PS2 didn't support HD, I'd still recommend getting component cables.
