The PS2 supports 1080i resolution on an HDTV just fine, something even the XBox can't do.
Yeah, it's not quite as nice as 720p but your average person isn't going to really recognize the difference between progressive and interlaced anyhow, and 1080i actually looks better on the right TVs.
