all the temp sensor does is send the approx tempature to the guage it does not have anything to do with the cars computer. however the temp sender is the thing that sends the message to the computer. in answer to your question i dont beleave you have to drain your coolent to change the sensor or sender. i was reading about this about a week ago and i dont have my book with me right now so i am only 85% sure
