After shifting and a little brake-torque tango, the additional power and extra ratio add up to more straight-line performance than we expected: 0-to-60 mph arrives in 6.9 seconds, and the quarter-mile is over in 15.3 seconds at 91 mph.

I am impressed. But also angry

Now the new mustang v6 5 spd auto they can run 15.3's all day. Man i now now never to race one of those

Well just wanted to share this with everyone!!

A Mustang needs a V-8 to be a "real" Mustang. It's an image thing.

The Contour is not hindered by 40 years of history and "legend."

As was said, it's still a V6 Mustang.

My similarly-priced 4-door V6 Family Sedan will run a good half-second faster than that and my little i4 Hatchback will give it a run for its' money.

The sad thing is that every V6 Mustang owners thinks they're driving one of the fastest cars on the street.

Mustang is a great car. The idea of puttign the 4.0 in it is great. i just was hoping it would slower than our cars. But it seems very close.
I guess headers are going to have to be ordered now.

Can you see a 16yrd girl drving a v6 mustang and passes you on the eway cause she needed to pass you. And the funny thing she wouldn't have a problem doing so. That would feel like a slap in the face lol!! Damn, atleast it's a ford though.

My point is that it's very difficult to associate the Mustang's history and legacy as a muscle car with a V6 platform. If all I cared about when I bought a car was what was 'faster', then I suppose I could justify buying a V6 Mustang over the Contour, or getting upset that my Contour was slower. Vehicles, believe it or not, are not entirely about how fast you can run the quarter mile. The image they have and the way they represent you are also a part of that. V6 Mustangs don't represent muscle cars at all, and if you think you're driving a muscle car with a V6 mustang then you are delusional.

The reason the 'Contour is still a Contour' argument doesn't apply here is that the Contour has no legend or mystique as a fast car. So if you get beat in a race by anything, or beat something in a race, you can't say 'a Contour is still a Contour'. That's why people get in trouble when they start to think their 15.5 second Contour is fast, because then you're trying to elevate your Contour to a status you have no business trying to give it.

...And as someone else mentioned in this thread, people who drive V6 Mustangs think their cars are the fastest thing in the world. I have a book 6 inches thick of good V6 Mustang jokes I've told to V6 Mustang drivers.

This is true, the muscle car era was back in history, every muscle car had to have a V8, including the Mustang. Taking away this V8 and putting in a V6, is like taking away from the Mustang's history. When someone says Mustang, you automatically think of the nice sounding V8 engine that's in them.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.
