I know that a company called Aura systems has been aggressively pursuing electromagnetic (sloenoid) valve actuation very aggressively in recent years for the US auto makers. The benefits of such a system are almost unimaginable.
Its too bad that solenoid technology just isn't quite up to the task for now.
