I know that smart valves in general are on the way, but what about the product that I linked to?

Didn't Cadillac do something with soleniods in the valve train where the engine would "turn off" cylinders to conserve fuel?

Hmmm...I wonder how much power there would be in a 2.5L two stroke with a turbo! Dang EPA! Dang cost of gas! :p

The power draw to operate these valves should be very small compared to the HP loss generated by the current valvetrains.

I say, bring it on!!
I think it has more to do with the costs of the carbon-ceramic seals and bearings that his system requires. Variable valve timing using his system would be ideal, as there is almost 0 parasitic loss to drive the valves.

For anyone who is not familiar with this, go to www.coatesengine.com

Is the coates engine like the OX-2 "valveless" engine that is being used for R and D? Or am I completely lost here?

Go to the site I linked, there you will see what it is.

I went to the site, and it just made me more curious. That really why I posted. This type of talk is way over my head. I really don't have enough information about the ox-2 valveless engine to compare the two to see if they are similar, or maybe even the same thing. I had read an article some time ago about the ox-2, and it discussed a rotating assembly without valves, but didn't go into a lot of detail about how it worked. It just mentioned HUGE torque numbers as compared to a conventional motor.

This is a variation on the old idea of sleeve valve (circa early 1900) ,one of the best was called the 'Aspin' engine,a Brit had cone shaped revolving combustion chambers with port cut outs, the revolved and aligned with intake & exhaust ports in the head, the cone was spun by bevel gears off the crank, worked well and revved up to 10,000rpm, but the matrials at that time didnt hold up...like I said no real 'new' ideas just variations.....

The Willys Knight also had a sleve valve engine. I am told that you could easily spot one going down the road by the plume of oil smoke that it left behind. It did not control oil from getting into the combustion chambers very well.
