Does anybody know if there is anything different with the 98 fuel level gauge than the 96-97 contours? I broke my 98 fuel gauge, so I replaced it with one from a 96-97 contour, both had tachs, and now my needle varies as much as 3/8 tank WHILE DRIVING. Heck, I'm driving home tonight and the needle was on E after only 125 miles, then when I came to a stop light, it rose to just below 1/2. WHAT IS GOING ON?!? I looked at my old one and there seems to be some sort of resistor or something connecting the two prongs, could that have anything to do with it?

The gauge I'm talking about:

Call your local parts store to see if the part numbers are different for the different years. Thats the easy way.

If it was my car, I would cut one end of the resister off and and tape it, then pop it in and test it.
