A growl and a whirrr are two completely different things.
My car doesn't whirrr in reverse either, and you're right about it being 4-bangers that generally make that distinct sound. Don't know of any growling incedents though.
But to be completely honest...the real reason I moved from Ft. Wayne, In to Fl was because Mark(Y2KSVT) was crowding my space with his black SVT. I swear he wants to be just like me.
