In actuality, it is the mechanic that gets the raw deal. He must perform the job, which usually takes around 14 hours, but only gets paid for 5-7 hours. Obviously, who would want a repair job where he would be paid for only half the time he spent working on your car. I've heard it mentioned that paying the mechanic an out of pocket "tip" (around $100) will help ensure that he does a better job, since he's not getting shafted quite as bad.
