All depends on your usage, but that interval shouldn't be a problem unless you do all city driving or drive in dusty areas, etc. And changing the filter at 3K is completely unnecessary unless the above is true.

Might want to get an oil analysis done - that will give you a good idea of how your oil is holding up and you can make a decision from there.

FWIW I tried a NAPA Gold filter at my last change (circumstances pretty much limited my choices). What a piece of crap. Never sealed properly.
