Gonna change my oil this weekend. I've been using Castrol GTX since I got the car in October of '02 with 50,000 miles on it. Well, it has 98,000 on it now and I'm wondering if anyone here has an opinion about the Castrol GTX High Mileage oil. I'm sure someone does. Let me hear from ya.

I suspect that it is snake oil. That seems to be the general feeling at www.bobistheoilguy.com

The general feeling about Castrol has really fallen off since they have been able to get away with claiming that their Syntec is a full synthetic when most other oil companies recognize that the base oil they use as a dino oil. Syntec is a good oil and provides good results, but the feeling is that it should not be in the same class as Mobil 1, Amsoil, or Red Line, nor should it cost as much.

The base oil used in Syntec is Group III, the same as Mobil is using in it's current dino oil (Mobil 5000).

No one at bob is the oil guy has figured out what the unique ingredient is in the add pack that Castrol uses in Start-Up to make them be able to claim that it is better in that particular regard.

By the way, some Auto Zones are selling Valvoline Max Life 5W/30 full synthetic (Max Life is available in both dino and full synthetic) for $2.00 a quart. At that price for a true full synthetic I emptied the shelf at a nearby Auto Zone so that is what I will be using for the next few oil changes. It is the same stuff that I paid $3.99 a quart for a couple of months ago for my last oil change. It seems to be pretty good stuff, especially when priced about the same as dino Castrol Start-Up.

Ya when I worked at Valvoline instant oil change I made a profit from damn near every customer that came in. Id look at their odo and if it was above 75k id shoot some lame azz sales pitch. "It is specially designed to make the gaskets swell up to prevent premature leaking and provide your car w/ a better performing longer lasting engine yada yada yada"...all while holding the dipstick w/ dirty oil on it. I wasn't far from the truth though b/c that is exactly what its supposed to do. Its prety good stuff. Id just embelish a bit since I'd get a little added $$ to the paycheck per every Max life I sold.
