One of the very first things to do is to teach your dog to heel and come. As long as you teach that first you will have control of them, the rest is really just parlour tricks. Dogs pretty much learn to go outside on their own, just takes them some time really.
Positive reinforcement is definitely the way to go, but remember you don't have to spare the rod.
