You can train your puppy yourself. Basically it involves:
1) Pick up the puppy when he starts sniffing around like he's looking for a place to pee/poop, and carry him outside to the place you want him to pee/poop;
2) Praising the puppy like crazy when he pees/poops where you want him to.
3) Don't yell at or hit the puppy when he makes mistakes. He won't understand, and he will develop behavior problems.
These are just the basics; there is a lot more to know. Get a book on raising a puppy. They all have chapters on housebreaking a puppy.
all good advice. the best trained dog i have ever had is my current dog, who is 1 1/2. positive re-enforcement is the only way to go. when she was a pup, we took her out almost every hour, or whenever she sniffed for more than a second. we would say to her "outside" while scratching our hands on the door. we never crated her, but eventually had to create a "room" for her in the kitchen b/c of her chewing problem.
