It will become very apparent that I don't know scotch. I like Cardhu, but it isn't rated very highly. I also liked a Lagavulin (sp?) 15 or 16 year old that I tried. Actually, I have liked even the cheap Dewar's blend type whisky's. The most expensive was probably a Macallan 1968 something or another, but it wasn't as exceptional as the price would indicate.

Excellent choice...
Single malts rock! That is my preferred single malt as well. Not only a fine whiskey, but also readily available. I've had a few others that I liked as well or perhaps a little better, but you can't find them as regular stock in most package stores.
Blended, I like the JW Black, but I also appreciate a lighter blend like the Dewars 12 year old. Nice before dinner while I'm cooking.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Excellent choice, I like that one as well. The one thing that I have never been able to get into are the scotch tasting/cigar sampling events. I just have never developed a taste for cigars, and I even had an authetic Cuban onced
Just because it's cuban doesn't make it good.
Most of the mystique comes from it not being available. And don't worry about developing a taste for cigars. To be honest, they only kill the flavor of what you are eating and drinking.

Most blends are much easier drinking whisky's than single malts.

This collegue I worked with that is a cigar snob got some Havanas and said they were the best. He also gave me one called a Pyramid or something. I guess I must have been traumatized in college, because I always think of pledging and being hazed while actives blow cigar smoke in your face.

True. But once you've tried a good West Coast peaty single malt, it's hard to go back to the farm, so to speak....

From hacks!
If you order a scotch of any kind, "on the rocks", in a fine Scottish Pub, you'd be called a right wanker indeed.
The ice actually changes the chemical makeup of the tanins, which give the Scotch's flavor. The dilution is not the problem. Actually it's common to dilute a scotch with a little purified water, to make it a little more palatable for those who don't like it's harsh bite.

And it's worth every last cent!! There is a reason why Blue label drinkers kiss the bottle before pooring.
