you know, after reading countless posts on the subject i think that it is time that we re-thought how we talk about 3.0l's. as of now we call them wahat they are, full oval, hybrid (3.0 with 2.5l heads and 3.0 valves), but this leaves a lot of room for confusion. for instance, in a recent post, somebody referred to demonsvt's set up as a full oval port, which it is not. (can you see where i am going with this?) if nothing else we need to at least come up with a simple catch phrase to describe a 3l with oval port heads, and svt induction. just for the sake of clarity. i am no noob and this can even get tricky for somebody who knows what they're talking about especially when hearing about all of 'em in the same post!! now imagine being a newbie and trying to figure this stuff out...holy crap man!

what does everyone think?

suggestions...
split port 3l the early taurus kind

full oval port referring to a 3l setup that still retains its oval manifolds ala stazi

hybrid stays the same as it is now 3l w/2.5 heads & 3l valves

"insert name here" oval port w svt induction ala demonsvt

Hybrid's don't have to have 3L valves to be a hybrid.

Hybrid = 3L block w/ 2.5L top end

Not sure what you could call the 3.0L block/top end with the 2.5L intakes

It's used countless times already on all threee forums ... it's called a 3L SVT.

3L = 3.0L block, 3.0L heads
SVT = SVT Cams

So, to summerize:

3L SVT = 3.0L block & heads with SVT cams

Damn you are making it MUCH MORE difficult than it is.

The entire terminology refers to the ENGINE. That's it.

No induction, no exhaust, no tranmsmission, et cetera.

Full Oval Port is 3L oval heads and 3L block.

Hybrid is 2.5L heads and 3L block.

It really is as simple as that.

SVT is commonly added if the SVT camshafts have been added to the mix.
Normally that includes all the SVT manifolds as well but those in themselves DO NOT make it an SVT 3L. The cams are what give it that nomenclature.

Most of the time the manifold type is a given. (i.e. any split port head is using spit port manifolds )

Nearly all oval port engines are running split port manifolds

IIRC there are only 1 or 2 people running 3L oval port manifolds. That can using be designated by stating such.
However it has NOTHING to do with it being a hybrid or full oval port.

Only 1 or 2 running 3L oval port?! I didn't realize I was in such a small crowd. Guess I'll change my sig to reflect that. I may have been one of the first to actaully try and do an oval port swap.

Everyone has their own interpretation of anything on the net. I read "full 3L" as everything 3L from intake to pan. Of course people usually add on their substantial mods to that such as "full 3L with SVT cams"... I know of more full 3L's than I do 3L oval ports with modified twin port intakes on them...

The main thing a newbie needs to understand is that there are MANY MANY options that he/she can move forward with. Judged by budget, parts and knowledge available, and how long they've been a member (or lurking) on this and other Contour/Cougar based boards.
