I also have the WRT54G and it rocks. Never had a problem with it and wireless reaches surprisingly far. Dlink is pure crap in a box.
I would definitely recommend Linksys, they are made by Cisco!

all my friends and most of my teachers from my tech school all have linksys.....
one of my friends has a d-link and it stopped working after about a month.. and he had 3 of them.. so this one wasnt defective.. ( he worked at sears and got a great deal on them.. so he took all three. but then he used all three.. ))
so my opinion! stay away from dlink..

Get a WRT54G and then talk to these guys (http://sveasoft.com) about some third-party firmware for it. Then, boost your signal, setup SSHD, sysloging, iptables, etc, etc...
Paid the $20 for the 'full' release firmware, and I'm MUCH happier with the WRT54G's functionality.
Now, if only the madwifi driver supported WAP-TKIP w/AES...

I like linksys routers, and they sell range expanders that work with their hardware ( i don't think they work with anything else), they really help if you're having signal problems. I haven't had any major issues, and most that i've had have been solved by updating the firmware.

Well, sorta made by Cisco. Cisco purchased Linksys to enter the home and SoHo market. They only changes made to the actual devices is the Cisco logo on in the GUI. No hardware design changes, other than products slated to come out soonly.
By that token, the Linky WRT54G is the de-facto standard G router out on the market now (at least I think so). They are totally hackable and I have had nothing but great luck with Linky products for the past 10 years. Look into the the HyperWRT firmware for the WRT54G/GS. It has some cool features like QoS that I use for my VoIP phone. It can also boost the power output of the unit, just don't go past 80% or the router will overheat and reload itself. As for the disconnects, it could be a firmware bug (which Linksys has since corrected) or it could be something with the Windows Wireless Zero configuration.

i have a dlink and i cant wait to get rid of it DI524 with the G extreme crap, i mean card. the router worked beautifully for months until one day it just stopped working. it still does the hardline connection good but the wireless is kaput. the wireless card had given me nothing but problems since day 1! DLink's support absolutely sucks. i should have bought Linksys in the first place but i wanted to save $ and that's what I get i will be going out to get a linksys router and card soon. my buddy has a few of them, home and the office and NEVER has any problems with them.

it only needs to reach about 50 or so feet.. just enough to go from the room the router is in to where we might use the laptop.. but i can also buy the range extender as said...
oh yeah, i'm not home sick...i'm AT home... sick...
