Passing off a promise ring as an egagement ring - classy! Sounds like someone cheaped out.....marriage and egagement are things of tradition, so to stick with tradition and not look like a cheap b@stard, you should get a solitaire ring. I prefer the Princess cut myself. The Marquis cut looks too 80's and the traditional diamond cut is played out. A nice variation of the Princess cut is the Pillow Cut, similar in that it is square, but with chamfered edges. Look at spending around $3k minimum, and don't necessarily focus on size, because if the clarity and color is wrong, people will see it. Nothing is worsethan a 1ct diamond with a piece of fly-sh!t in the middle. :blackeye; and yo want a ring that you baby is going to look at and love, and thus think of you. Not look at, think you're a cheap b@stard, and then look for someone else with more class......

Not sure if this refers to my post, but if so I can assure you a woman will appreciate the effort you go to to create something unique, instead of acting like a sheep and throwing your money at the same thing everyone else has. Plus she will also be aware that smaller individual diamonds, when added up, represent the same cash outlay as a big one

Does this refer to me or the thread starter?

I think he meant the thread dtarter.
And for your info, 10x 0.1ct diamonds will cost a FRACTION of a single 1ct diamond.

Geez... if it were me I would spend $500-$1000 dollars on the engagement and then more on the actual wedding ring. I believe the wedding ring is the important thing.

Whoops, you're right, I had a brain puke on that one
But the original point still stands, and frankly your assumption that my efforts were construed as classless couldn't be further from the truth. No skin off my back though.

Rather than "sticking with tradition" I prefer to stick with what the woman is going to actually want.
Solitaires are great but many women prefer something else. Multi-stone engagement rings are now far and away more popular than solitaires and "alternative" stones are quickly gaining in popularity.
Smaller women in particular tend to not like solitaries because a solitaire of any significant size looks hugely disproportionate on their finger. Now that looks "cheap". A 1ct diamond solitaire would look horrible on my wife's size 3 ring. The diamond and mount would literally be taller than the band itself. It'd look horrible and you can be virtually assured that the stone would get knocked off at some point. But 0.75ct and two 0.5ct looks a great deal better, and more importantly it's what she wanted.

Then get her what she wants. Not what you think she should have because it's "tradition".

Neither I, nor my GF like plain diamond engagement rings. I have a few good South African friends with horror stories about DeBeer's and she just doesn't like the look. Personally, if I ever get an engagement ring for her it will have either a Tanzanite or Alexandrite center stone. Screw tradition, do what you like... IMHO

Tanzanite is a gorgeous stone. The promise ring I gave my wife years ago was a 3-stone Tanzanite ring. Difficult to find, Light-colored, flawless Tanzanite can easily get right up there with the cost of a diamond and is extremely rare as well. I believe there's only a couple places in the world where it can be found.
