Neither I, nor my GF like plain diamond engagement rings. I have a few good South African friends with horror stories about DeBeer's and she just doesn't like the look.
Personally, if I ever get an engagement ring for her it will have either a Tanzanite or Alexandrite center stone. Screw tradition, do what you like... IMHO
