Sounds like someone cheaped out.....marriage and egagement are things of tradition, so to stick with tradition and not look like a cheap b@stard, you should get a solitaire ring. I prefer the Princess cut myself. The Marquis cut looks too 80's and the traditional diamond cut is played out. A nice variation of the Princess cut is the Pillow Cut, similar in that it is square, but with chamfered edges.
Rather than "sticking with tradition" I prefer to stick with what the woman is going to actually want.
Solitaires are great but many women prefer something else. Multi-stone engagement rings are now far and away more popular than solitaires and "alternative" stones are quickly gaining in popularity.
Smaller women in particular tend to not like solitaries because a solitaire of any significant size looks hugely disproportionate on their finger. Now that looks "cheap". A 1ct diamond solitaire would look horrible on my wife's size 3 ring. The diamond and mount would literally be taller than the band itself. It'd look horrible and you can be virtually assured that the stone would get knocked off at some point. But 0.75ct and two 0.5ct looks a great deal better, and more importantly it's what she wanted.

and yo want a ring that you baby is going to look at and love, and thus think of you.
Then get her what she wants. Not what you think she should have because it's "tradition".
