If the Dad gets his ceremony thing on a Friday, I don't think it would be rude to do your thing on a Sunday. He's a guy; come Saturday morning he's not going to be dwelling on "his" weekend, he'll probably be out mowing the lawn or something like any other day. But, same day, definitely out of the question.

Dirt cheap diamonds has actually gotten good reviews from a lot of people. And I agree about ring size. My gf is 5'3" 115lbs, she doesn't need much more than .75 to 1.25 carats

My wife's not as small as your future wife, and her ring is just under a carat and looks appropriate on her not very dainty hands (she's good with them though ). 1 carat should be plenty of rock for you.
I paid under $3k for a J color VVS2 clarity .85 carat stone set in 14k gold from the family jewler, which is just under half what he'd charge you walking in off the street. If you have *any* ins with a jewler now's the time to take advantage. Bluenile.com is supposed to be very, very good and it's good that they sell certified stones (IIRC) so you have an independent verification of what you're buying. DeBeers is afraid of them which isays a lot. Bank the difference of the 2 months salary and have the honeymoon of your dreams...
As far as timing, I don't think the weekend you've mentioned would be a problem, but talk to your future father-in-law first and make sure he's cool with it. Keep making sure until he's *this* close to smacking you upside the head to be sure. I think it'd be cool to be able to tell her when she's bitching about turning 30 and not even being engaged "let me see what I can do about that..."
Oh, congrats in advance.

I personally used Blue Nile 2 years ago, and have nothing but good things to say about them. Read too many horror stories of being ripped off in the Diamond District, was disappointed in the quality and quantity of what was available in the local malls / jewelers. With Blue Nile (and any other store for that matter), you should always back it up with an independent appraisal by a certified gemologist. BN has a 30 day return policy IIRC. The thing I liked about them was how easy it was narrow down a search for a stone with BN based on the 4C's and the budget you have to work with. Be prepared for a large price jump from just under 1 carat to over 1 carat. $3k will get you a nice quality stone probably somewhere between .8 and .9 ct.
And while you are looking, think about the wedding band you are going to get later as well. Some of the engagement bands are tough to match to wedding bands. Also, stay away from eternity bands, as you can't get them resized.
Good luck.

IMO it's not the size, it's the quality. You can definitely find a good cut and exceptional colour for reasonable monies. Have a peek at the stone distributors, mountings are cheap. Suggestion http://www.duttonsdiamonds.com/diamonds.html

well i think maybe proposing after the ceremony and all might be a good deal. Its not like hes marrying the girl that day. Dont want too many anniversaries on one weekend. As for the rock, get a good ol canadian diamond! No slaves diggin the mines, no money goin to terrorists. Nothing to give ya a bad consicience. I dont know what kind of money you should spent on the ring though, personally i wouldnt want to marry a broad that made a big stink about the cost of a ring. If she likes you, she likes you for you, not your money. I just hope you two are happy and have a good life together. Hope it works out well.

As far as the ring goes, I'm not a fan of arbitrarily spending 2 months' salary on a single diamond and then having it set in a generic band. You've known the chick for a while, you must have some sense of her style, so why not look for something unique? When I got engaged, I had a jewelry designer buy 5 smaller diamonds and have them set in a unique band. Not a difficult process, and not much more expensive than buying a run-of-the-mill solitaire in a gold band. Sure, she got a few comments like "that doesn't look like an engagement ring," but neither of us gave a crap what anyone else thought. Of course, we're not together anymore, but that has nothing to do with the ring As for your future father in law, if you do it that weekend he'll have two things to be happy about.
