Spend $1000 each on the desktop and lap then spend the rest on a wireless network for the two. You'll have two nice system and versatility ta boot. Don't put all your eggs in one basket and don't waste two grand on a notebook unless you have a plan that needs such a beast. You'll be happier with both.

it records live tv kinda like TiVo.
if youre in school, then i would HIGHLY recommend getting a laptop. i WISH i had one during my undergrad years. they were way tooo expensive back then and couldnt do much. i finally got one in grad school and it was saweeeet! now, everyone seems to have them at school. i even carry a cheap HP printer in my trunk for those emergency moments when i have to print something and dont want to rush all the way home.

Computers in general become outdated in less then a years time so to say you want something that will not be another drop in the bucket system is kind of redundant. If you want scalability and the options to move with technology, go with a desktop.

Now as for the price vs. reliability issues. Each company has it's flaws and it's really a case per case issue of good versus bad feedback from current users of each of the companies they offer their opinions on. You say you don't want hard core gaming specs on a laptop but your willing to spend $2300+ on one is just a rediculous statement. Your wasting your money spending anything over $1200 on a laptop especially for the things you say you require and don't require. It's like buying a house just because you like the garage, your wasting your money but at least the someone makes out in the end.

I think to better serve your question you should post exactly what you would like to do with the computer your looking to buy, whether it be a laptop or a desktop what will your main purpose be for buying the machine? If you have no clue and just say you want to surf the net then why toss your money out? As it stand you sound like you have money that is burning a hole in your wallet. Necessity versus need.

I disagree 110%.
Laptops get stolen more often than desktops, are less powerfull (thus less future proof) and are less reliable (which if they break all require model specific parts). Almost everyone I know who has a laptop primarially just lets it sit on their desk, so much for portability, especially when it weighs 9lbs and has poor battery life (as almost all "desktop replacement" models do). Heck I have a laptop in addition to my desktop, and the desktop takes up less space on my desk with the LCD.

well i guess in that case.. i want a laptop.. with a 17 inch. screen.. and just for surfing the net.. and downloading music and burning movies or songs, watching movies on it from time to time, you know, windows xp pro and the basics, and that is about it.. it is going to replace my desktop.. i am getting rid of my desktop.. and my desk.. so i just need a laptop.. to put next to my bed.. so i guess the best "bang for the buck" for what i said above...

does that help??

Either an apple powerbook or IBM Thinkpad, I don't think you could go wrong with either.

My school REQUIRES laptops now. Much nicer to be able to take your computer with you to the library and type a paper on your own machine away from your noisy roommates.

I even use mine (tablet pc) to take notes in class sometimes.

Deff get a laptop, then you can take it anywhere, or if your at home, just leave it on the DC power adapter. With a desktop, you obviously cant take it anywhere, and its just big. With all the technology being put into the laptops these days, yea, get one for sure.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.
